Old Workhouse in Cirencester

The workhouse opened in 1836 in the Quern's area of Cirencester replaced an earlier facility located in a different part of the town. One might imagine the ripples caused by opening such an establishment in this leafy semi-rural suburb of Cirencester, with its large houses. One such resident was Arnold Merrick, known to Budding and Ferrabee, and an early owner of a Budding Patent lawnmower in 1831.

Many of the original buildings have survived and are now occupied by Cotswold District Council.
