Collection, Preservation and Display of Old Lawn Mowers

Obelisk at Querns, Cirencester

This obelisk was erected by the Bathurst family of Cirencester Park. Edwin Budding, when travelling up the road from Stroud to Cirencester, would have passed the perimeter wall of the deer park (it is the same route today). Aristarchus Merrick, when fallen on hard times in his native Herefordshire, was given benevolent employment by the Bathurst family. His son Arnold Merrick drew up and acted as witness on Edwin Budding and John Ferrabee's May 1830 indenture agreement on the lawnmower.
