St Mary's Church, Painswick

St Mary's, Painswick is famous its collection of 17th and 18th century chest tombs of local clothiers and the 99 clipped yew trees in the churchyard. The yews were planted in the 1790s, so would have been mere saplings in Budding's day. Painswick is known as the "Queen of the Cotswolds" and was one of the most important wool and cloth centres from medieval times. It was close to Budding's family roots; some local broad weavers and more relatively local to his wife's family who lived nearby.
