Over 6000 Machines Sold

The James Ferrabee advertisement in The Gardeners Chronicle, dated 25 April 1857, claims that the company had made upwards (ie more) than 6000 lawnmowers by this point.

  • IMPROVED MOWING MACHINES

    MANUFACTURED BY

JAMES FERRABEE & CO., PHOENIX IRON WORKS,

    NEAR STROUD, GLOUCESTERSHIRE.

    HORSE MACHINE-HALF-INCH SCALE

THESE MACHINES can be used by unskilful labourers with equal facility on Lawns, Verges, between Flower-beds, on Bowling-greens, Cricket and Pleasure-grounds. They execute their work in an expeditious and superior manner, producing a more even and uniform surface than the most skilful mower, and are readily adjusted to cut various lengths. The Grass is cut best when dry, so that a machine can be employed at the most convenient time to the workman, and more than double the work may be done with the same manual labour that is required with a scythe. The Machines are fitted with every attention to strength and durability, and are not liable to get out of order. The 28 inch and 36 inch machines are made very strong, and will cut the longest and coursest Grass usually met with on Lawns and Pleasure grounds. Mowing Machines were first introduced by the Proprietors of the Phoenix Iron Works, who have manufactured and sold upwards of 6000. They have from time to time effected many improvements in the Machines, and this year have perfected a very useful Machine 12 inches wide for small lawns, or to be used in conjunction with one of the larger machines. It will cut and collect the Grass on a lawn, containing 200 square yards, in 25 minutes, and is free from the objection of having rollers in front of the cutters.

    "FERRABEE'S" IMPROVED HAND MACHINES

Are so constructed that they may be either drawn or pushed, and they are much easier to manage and more generally applicable to the various conditions of Lawns than Machines worked only by a drawing handle.
