Collection, Preservation and Display of Old Lawn Mowers

James Ferrabee at Port Mill Brimscombe

In 1863, James Ferrabee moved his business affairs from The Phoenix Iron Works a little way up the valley on the River Frome to Port Mill in Brimbscombe to concentrate more on textiles. Henceforth, Ferrabee Lawnmowers were badged as "Phoenix Iron Works Company".

The removal of the Ferrabee name on the casting is also likely to be due to there being other business partners in the company, and the dilution of Ferrabee's control, c1862/3

This photograph was taken in 2024. The mill is currently part of "The Brimbscombe Port Development", although at the time of writing this appears to have stalled. The listed Brimscombe Mill, with Cotswold stone ashlar, is preserved, while the "modern" mill extensions and consolidation work were undertaken in 2022.

Ferrabee historian Harold B. Randall notes that Ferrabees and their partners continued to own the Phoenix site until around 1923/4.
