John Ferrabee's Last Residence

John Ferrabee died in 1853 at his last home, Ashcroft House in Bowbridge on the Stroud to Cirencester road. It is one mile north of Thrupp Mill and closer to Stroud Town centre. Ashcroft House has vanished. The current housing on the site was built around 1988.

The scene in this c1900 photograph is less industrial than it would have been at Thrupp or Brimscombe fifty years earlier. Eagle Mill, a saw mill, was just below Ferrabee's home. After several repurposes and fires it was demolished in the 1990s.
