Bankruptcy of Edward Sheppard
Edward Sheppard of The Ridge went bankrupt in 1837. He had owned of various land, property and mills, including his mill at Uley which became the site of a foundry and agricultural works.

THEREAS a Fiat in Bankruptcy is awarded and issued
Sheppard the younger, of Uley, in the county of Gloucester, Clothiers and Copartners, Dealers and Chapmen, and they being declared bankrupts are hereby required to surrender themselves to the Commissioners in the said Fiat named, or the major part of them, on the 13th day of February next, and on the 14th day of March following, at eleven o'clock in the forenoon on each day, at the Old Bell Inn, in the town of Dursley, in the said county, and make a full discovery and disclosure of their estate and effects; when and where the credi- tors are to come prepared to prove their debts, and at the first sitting to choose assignees, and at the last sitting the said bankrupts are required to finish their examination, and the creditors are to assent to or dissent from the allowane of their certificate. All persons indebted to the said Bank rupts, or that have any of their effects, are not to pay or deliver the same but to whom the Commissioners shall appoint, but give notice to Messrs. Lot L. All that the manor or lordship of Woodmancote, otherwise Woodmancote with Nibley, within the parish of Dursley, in the county of Gloucester, with all the royalties, privileges, fee farm rents, and other appurtenances thereto belonging.
Lot 2. All those several pieces of pasture, arable, and wood land ground, called Gancel Acre, the piece adjoining Gancel Acre, Gancel Field, the Seven Acres, the Orchard, New England, Hatchet Acre, Bobbs Tyning, the Tyning, the Three Acres, and Whistle Field, containing together twenty-eight acres, or thereabouts, all freehold (except about four acres and a half, which are lifehold, held under the Corporation of Bristol). situate at Woodmancote, in the parish of Dursley, in the several occupations of Messrs. Joseph Gazard, John Jenkins, Samuel Bendall, and John French, as tenants thereof.
Lot 3. All that freehold wood, situate at Woodmancote, in the said parish of Dursley, extending from Whiteway up to the turnpike at Bowcott, and lying on the north side of the turn- pike road leading from Dursley to Tetbury, and containing about seventy acres.
Lot 4. All that wood, with the two cottages thereon, situate at Bowcott, in the parishes of Uley and North Nibley, in the said county of Gloucester, extending from the road leading to Waterly Bottom towards Bowentt, being within the park wall belonging to the Ridge Mansion, and lying on the south side of and bounded by the turnpike road leading from Dursley to Tetbury, containing about fifty aeres, the whole of which is freehold, except about eight acres which are leasehold, for the remainder of a term of 890 years.
Lot 5. All those extensive and valuable freehold cloth mills, called Uley Mills, situate in the village of Uley, about two miles from the town of Dursley, and in the centre of the clothing district, lately in the occupation of the bankrupts, partly driven by water power and partly by steam; together with the wool-lofts, drying-houses, workshops, engine-houses, dye-houses, shear shops, stoves, workmens' houses, offices, and outbuildings thereto belonging, capable of finishing at least one hundred ends of cloth per week; toge her with three capital steam engines, of forty, twenty-eight, and twenty horse power, enclosed in substantial fire-proof buildings; together with a dwelling-house and garden occupied by Mr. Daniel Jobbins, and about twelve acres of meadow, pasture, and garden ground, all adjoining the mill.
The buildings on this lot have been chiefly erected within the last thirty years, are built of stone and partly fire-proof, all lie close together, and are most desirable to any person wishing to carry on an extensive and profitable manufacture; the workpeople in the neighbourhood are some of the best engaged in the superior manufacture of the West of Eugland. Lot 6. All that substantial freehold messuage or farm-house, with the barn, stable, cow-house, yard, and meadow land thereto adjoining, containing about six acres, situate at Bow- cott, in the parish of Newington Bagpath, in the said county, and now in the occupation of Mr. Paradise, as tenant thereof. Lot 7. All that excellent messuage and farm, called the Sheephouse Farm, situate in the said parishes of Dursley and Uley, in the occupation of Mr. Joseph Gazard, as tenant thereof, containing about eighty-two acres of pasture, thirty acres of arable, and one acre of wood land, the whole of which is freehold of inheritance, except about six acres thereof, which are lifehold, held under the Corporation of Bristol.
