Life of William Fullerton Lindsay-Carnegie

W F Lindsay-Carnegie was the the first owner of a Shanks Lawnmower. He was one of the first people to see the potential for new developments of what, at the time, was a relatively new and specialised piece of machinery.

Born a Lindsay, on marrying into the Carnegie family he adopted the double-barrelled name. His ancestors, the Lindsay clan, were involved in a famous battle at Arbroath in 1446. Alexander Ogilvy of Inverquharity was a notable contributor to the conflict. One of W F Lindsay-Carnegie's children, who died in infancy, was given the middle name Ogilvie.

Lindsay-Carnegie was well known during his lifetime for his interests in gardening, engineering, botany, and many other subjects. He is known to have corresponded with many other influential and enlightened contemporaries, including Charles Darwin. He was present at the opening of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway and this led to his involvement in a number of new railway companies.

This brief biography was published towards the end of the Victorian era as part of a book on well known figures from Arbroath's history.
