Stone Ashlar Block Bridge at Uley

Edward Sheppard was a local clothier whose mill on the River Ewelme at Uley boasted three beam engines and several water wheels. Sheppard was declared bankrupt in 1837 and by 1840 Richard Clyburn and George Lister were operating a foundry on the site, known as The Earl of Ducie's Ironworks. This ran for just over 10 years producing, among many other things, the adjustable wrench, vegetable cutter, and various other agricultural implements devised or invented by Edwin Budding.

The mill fell into disuse and by the 1890s around 90 per cent of it had been demolished. It is likely that the stone blocks in this simple bridge came from the site.
