Despite the industrial revolution, religion of whatever denomination was still a cornerstone of everyday life. St John The Baptist, the Church of England parish church, was still in Budding's day a place for weekly worship, baptisms, marriages, and funerals. No doubt Budding visited the parish church when visiting the town on business.
