Budding Patent Model
This model is believed to have been manufactured pre-1843 as it incorporates the early type ratchet overrun mechanism on the rear roller. It is assumed that the model was used by Ferrabee's representatives when visiting potential stockists - rather than taking a full-sizes machine - to demonstrate the features and benefits of the lawnmower. Many other companies, including those making agricultural and related products, produced or commissioned models for the same purpose during this era.
The Alexander Shanks Jnr. of Arbroath Pony Mower ("a promising invention of Mr, Talbot") as seen on the cover of The Engineer Magazine on the 23 July 1842 had an overrun dog clutch drive mechanism. It is assumed that John Ferrabee adopted this from 1843, as advertisements from that year he start to claim "The Mower has recently undergone improvements."
Assuming so, the model would date from before 1843 as it does not have these design modifications.
The illustration and engravings used to prepare the printing blocks for Ferrabee's advertising were produced by Jabez Hare, a Victorian artist known for providing commercial illustrations. It is possible that Hare had this - or a similar - model at his studio on The Strand In London when preparing the engravings.
