Tetbury Market Hall

Built in 1655 as the "Great Tolsey" for the sale of wool and yarn for the weaving and broadcloth industry, Tetbury Market Hall was enlarged in 1740 and its hipped roof added in 1816-7. It is still the centre of trade and activity in Tetbury.

The important town of Tetbury - close to the Stroud valleys, Uley and Dursley - would have been a familiar destination to Edwin Budding and his collaborators. Richard Clyburn, Budding's colleague at The Uley Ironworks who invented the shifting adjustable spanner died, in Tetbury on 18 October 1852, aged 56.
