Holy Cross, Owlpen

Many of John Ferrabee's ancestors came from Owlpen and nearby Uley. The churchyard at Owlpen contains a tomb of a Charles Ferrabee, who died 20 August 1829, aged 71. This is the left of the two slab tombs surrounded by ivy around it in the right foreground. It is listed as No 64 on the 1929 Church Plan Index.

By coincidence, John's father Edward also died in 1829 and was buried at the non-conformist chapel in Stroud which was demolished in 1977.

Owlpen Church is still standing although it is somewhat of a "trigger's broom"; it was rebuilt in 1828-30 by Samuel Manning and again in 1874/5 by JP St Aubyn. The south porch dates from 1897 and the tower, seen here and which looks medieval, is also a rebuild, dated 1911/2.
