Faulty Petrol Taps For Suffolk Super Colt

Hi,

I bought a very rusty mower mainly for the 75cc cast iron engine parts as the one on my 17" Super Punch was a problem which I have now fixed so am now deciding it the Colt is worth restoring!

First of all I was trying to get the engine running,  cleaned and adjusted points and now have a good spark then cleaned carb fuel tank, as the fuel tap was leaking I bought a plastic red lever "twist" type which became very tight and squeaky.

The local dealer replaced the tap and said they all become stiff and squeaky due to the petrol!!

What experiences have other had as I now have fuel starvation and it seems to be the new tap!?

(if I tickle the the float no fuel come out of the hole in the carb)

PS I did have a plastic push tap with yellow "button" that worked OK for years on newish fuel  but all that seems available now are ones wit the red lever)

I’ve had the issues that you describe, stiff and squeaky with pattern part in line taps for Hayters but not with genuine Briggs branded taps. Not a fuel problem , more like “ what you pay for”. For normal in season use I use E5 fuel with a stabiliser. Last fill of the season or for machines that are not run very often, it’s worth running a bit of Aspen through them before standing up.

I ordered another tap but with a yellow lever,  everywhere I've looked the part seems identical!

I am not familiar with stabilizers I've seen "Wynns Stabilizer" is this the type you use!?

Aspen seems very expensive but gets good write-ups so might use at the end of season!

Thanks
