Can I just add some more info for the member who has posted the images above, he is enquiring as to why these clips appear on an Atco Standard HY, whilst I don't have an HY some old images I have found confirm the clips in place?

Any comment please.

The clips are for the oil can supplied with the HY although one of them in this case will need to be turned around or reorientated.

The HY was supplied with a set of tools but unlike the Standard no toolbox hence the need for clips. Similarly the spanners would be hung from the cross spar on the same sort of clips as for the starting handle (as also seen on the Standard). Both type of clips can be missing.

Oil cans can occasionally be found on eBay or similar sites.

Many many thanks for the answer of the HY clips.  I am at present restoring the beast!!! and would like to know what sort of oil can to look out for to fit the clips.

Can I also ask what sort of tools were available for the HY and last but no means least anybody got a GRASSBOX for the 12". I know that it is very rare and I might be persuaded to purchase HY parts generally.

Thanks again for all the help in the past from all you gen members.

The HY would have been supplied with the circular oil can similar to the one in the photo here. There are, as far as I can recall, two versions that can be found.

The earlier one had the wording Atco Motor Mower in the centre and this is probably the version that would have been supplied with the HY. The second version (as pictured above) is slightly smaller and is later but would also look good with your HY if you can't find one of the earlier ones. As mentioned on the previous post they do crop up on eBay etc - there are a couple available at the moment - and I have also found them at autojumbles. Prices of around £25 are not unreasonable but you might be able to find one for a bit less with a bit of patience.

For the spanners, Atco supplied three different sizes of open-ended versions with the original Atco Motor Mower (of which the HY is the 12/14" version). These were 1/2"-3/8", 5/16"-1/4", and 3/16"-1/8". All had the Atco in raised lettering on them. These too can be found on eBay and elsewhere, typically for a few pounds. Always worth checking the spanner bins at autojumbles etc. Atco sold so many mowers that the spanners are relatively easy to find.

The photo below shows the tool box on my "Oval Frame" with a more-or-less full set of tools. Notice that the oil can is an even earlier version (not the one supplied with the HY) which has straight sides but it does show the wording and style of the earlier version of the oil can shown above. If anyone has a Standard with a wooden toolbax and was wondering what the inserts are for, this shows where each tool should go.

Finally, have a look at the parts list for the Standard on this site and you'll see the various items that were available (the spanners are listed as parts 5098, 5099 and 5100). The other spanners shown on the parts list are for the points (5344) and the Senspray carb (5412) supplied with the earlier and larger Standards (but not the HY).

I pulled one out earlier to discover that it had just one bracket. I wouldn't be surprised to find that one had been lost or broken along the way.

The oil can is a very tight fit but those that I have are all the same. 2 5/8ths x 7/8ths in the body, 6" overall with the spout. Perhaps HY's had a slightly smaller variation ?

On the subject of HY's I have dug out a photograph of a woman with an HY, undated & no location, it does show some of the tools & the oil can in position, I would assume the photo could be 1930's - 50's but the mower does look in good condition so assume towards the earlier date. Only a small photo 8cm x 6cm.
