Suffolk Super Colt Leaking Fuel

Hello All,

New person and first post here, and pretty mechanically hopeless so I come in hope of help please!!

I have two Super Colts, one I inherited from my Father which works and cuts beautifully but looks a little tired, having not been restored in any way, which I suppose is understandable given its age.

The other is a fully restored one which I recently bought. It looks as you would imagine - brand new! However, when I got it home I put some petrol in it (it was totally empty) and it started first time without any problem and sounded fine, but I then noticed petrol leaking from where the air filter is. I felt underneath and noticed there was no filter or grill. Would merely installing the missing parts solve the problem or is it something to do with the carburettor - or something else?

Thank you very much in advance.

The gauze missing wouldnt be the casuse of the leak, migt be a sticky float or bad gasket . Take carb off and disassemble and blow through the  carbs passages with compressed air. If you have a ultrasonic cleaner put the parts in that and give them a clean. Try Youtube for a video , Youll find plenty on there.

I took the carburettor off and gave it all a good clean, put it back on and started it up again, all fine. I then left it for a while and went to start it again. Whilst pressing the pre start screw (to get petrol into the carb) I noticed it I had over done it as petrol started coming out of the small hole in the float bowl (overflow?). I left it running and all was dry after a while.

So, thanks for your help but I think it was my over enthusiasm to get it first started that caused the problem!!!

I will get a seal/gasket for the top of the float bowl though as it looks a bit old and damp.

Thanks again.

Hello again.

I notice there doesn't seem to be a sump gasket fitted and oil/petrol is seeping out and down onto the back plate.

Is it a case of undoing the two bolts (front and back) towards the bottom of the engine, lifting and then sliding the gasket in, or is there more to it than that?

Thank you.

Have you looked in the parts manuals? Should be easy enoughto get a new gasket and fit it.
Good luck.
