Unrestored Patent Chain Automaton
I was excited to find an unrestored Ransomes Patent Chain Automaton at Malvern Flea and Collectors Fair this month. It appears to be complete but in a bit of a distressed state. It doesn't move without some force being applied, the chain is very stiff and the rollers are worn and pitted. For some reason it has two almost identical curved steel grass thrower plates, one on top of the other.
The woodwork of the grassbox appears saveable but the steelwork has some loss and, I think, will need to be replaced. I'm not sure how easy, or otherwise, it would be to get a replacement fabricated, including the edges which are rolled over a steel rod.
I would be very interested in any tips/advice from other owners who may have restored one of these machines before.
