Collection, Preservation and Display of Old Lawn Mowers

Budding Patent Retailer - Mapplebeck and Lowe of Birmingham

Mapplebeck and Lowe was an ironmongers and manufacturer that had premises in Birmingham.

The business sold a wide range of objects including the Budding Patent Lawnmower, as confirmed by their list of exhibits on Stand 49 at the Royal Agricultural Society of England Meeting at Shrewsbury on 15-17 July 1845. Another of their advertisements, from 1947, can be seen here. From the late 1840s to mid-1950s the business also sold the Ferrabee Improved.

Their display at the Royal Agricultural Society's Meeting in Gloucester in 1853 included a lawnmowing machine invented by E. Budding. It is assumed this was a Ferrabee machine rather than a Shanks or Samuelson (the other companies making lawnmowers at this date).
