Hayter 24" motor scythe

I am looking for some info/help here.  Can anyone supply me with photos or drawings of the rear swinging guard support hooks? They are not quite visible on the main frame assembly illustration in the Instruction book and are listed as a separate part (1714).

I need to fabricate a pair, so any help much appreciated.   I also need to find a makers plate for the front top guard....

Other than that, progress on restoration / rebuild is continuing.

 Cheers, Mark.

Sorry, but I cannot help you with a photo, but you should be able to work out the dimensions yourself after a bit of trial and error laugh . From memory,  they are just a strip of mild steel (1/8" thick approx) bent in an sort of S shape,

They hook around the back bar and then you close up the end to stop it falling off, you then hook the flap on and again close the other end slightly.

I don't understand the reference to a makers plate, Hayter were not great at fitting such plates and I do not remember seeing such a plate.

That's brilliant, it confirms what I imagined would be there. I can soon knock up a pair of those!

There should be a makers plate about 8" x 4" on the front top guard plate towards the front, I'll try a photo upload..

It contains the serial number. All I've got left are the rivets!  This photo is from a 26" on Ebay.

 Cheers, Mark.

Glad to help, as for the serial number plate, I can honestly say that I never saw a 24" with one fitted, but then when I was working on them back in the 70s, they were all elderly and had the top cover replaced at least once

Another question.... What size are the front and rear swinging guards?

hortimech Wed, 10/07/2013

Sorry, again I do not know the sizes, but you should be able to work it out, they just fit inside the frame and need to clear the floor ( I seem to remember that they were the same depth as the frame sides)  they have two slots for the hangers, these are approx 2 inch from each end and approx 1/2 inch down from the top. This is all from memory, the last time I saw one of these machines is approx 30 yrs ago.

If all else fails, you could always ring Hayter, ask for the service dept and see if they can help you.

Many thanks for your prompt response Roland,

I will make these up to suit... Hayters seem to go into freeze mode when I start asking about a machine from the 60's!  I just wish I hadn't given my mothers old one to one of my nephews in Dorset....It was complete.

The frame, panel work and wheels are complete now (with the exception of the swinging guards), so it's on to the Villiers Mk15. All stripped down and waiting for degrease and a couple of new parts.

Rolling chassis!.

I know what you mean about the "freeze mode" but unfortuately we all get older and retire! Not only that but but in the last 30 years most manufacturers will have "gone coputerised" which is another way of sying that someone will have made a decision of what to retain on a data base and what (hard copy manuals etc) to let go. I know of a couple of instaces were individuals in service departments have retained their own stock of old manuals and parts lists long after the company has officially forgotten about them but then when they left it got binned. That's why it's so important that sites like this and the VHGMC retain as much documentation and knowledge as possible but here again as the membership gets older that hands-on knowledge will disappear.
