Land master 85
Hi All,
I KNOW this is not a mower But I was hoping for some info, These are a simple machine that when started the blades turn with the engine as you throttle up, Now the one I have just been given has on the other handle bar another lever which seems to operate a large wheel which when you pull it the pulley type wheel is lifted up, is this a type of clutch arrangement does any one know?

If it has a Briggs and
If it has a Briggs and Stratton engine you can read the Model, Type and Code numbers stamped into the blower hosing (engine shroud) The code gives tha date that the engine was made, 790926** = 1979 September .26. ** Any following numbers/letters relate to the shift/plant of manufacture. The machine would usually be made within six months of the engine.

hi wristpin thanks for that It has a tecumseh engine One thing that puzzles me is most motors have a spark plug gap of 25/30 thou this tecumseh is less than that what problem would this give? as at the moment I can get to run for about 20 seconds then it stops as with a dirty carb problem, but it does fire up and run for that short period of time. The gap on the plug is as it was when the machine was given to me. Would re-setting gap to 30 thou as per manual make a difference?

Tecumseh have their own
Tecumseh have their own dating system and the engine information is usually stamped into the cowling but sometimes on a metal plate screwed to the cowling or even on a tag secured under one of the valve chest cover screws. I never found it as easy to cope with as the Briggs system but perhaps that was just a question familiarity not helped by some differences in the numbering between the US made Tecumsehs, the Italian Asperas (and latterly Tecnamotors /Tecumsehs) and in the early days the Australian made Kirby Lausons.

Edit. Sorry didn't mean to ignore your query re the plug gap. Doubt If Five thou will make much difference but on an engine that is perhaps past its best it's a good idea to have everything as near as the book spec as possible - ideally starting with the engine model number! The majority of Tecumseh medium frame engines such as the H40 used a 30 thou plug gap and 20 thou contact breaker gap if pre electronic.

Thanks for the info Wristpin, The only number that survived on the engine plate was HC30 CEA21 3051171 I checked the plug the gap was 14 thou reset to 25 thou and ran lovely apart from a nasty oil leak developing behind carb by the breather pipe and an inspection plate, after a couple of minutes, hopefully something straight forward But I do have a spare engine/carb (also has HC30 on it). The only other number so far is the "Land master" plate serial number but will keep looking.

Thanks wristpin sorry for late reply just come back from having 2nd total hip replacement. hoping to get back to the landmaster soon but i am on "Light duties" so says nurse wife lol so i am going to try and fit a coil to my 1747 atco I have a Villier,s coil will try to make spacers from old coil ends if it does not work will have to stump up £70.00 for right Villier,s coil.

Villiers coil. A while back there was a post on this forum from someone who was doing a similar thing using home made extension pieces to " lengthen" a coil with a short armature. As far as I know it was a success.

Now I have managed to clean it of it is a Land master 100 model and the lever is for operating the belt drive ie a clutch, any one have a clue how old? I reckon late 60s
