Atco Standard cone clutch springs

Hi

when I broke down the Standard Cone clutch there were four springs inside but eight holes. I've reassembled it with eight on the basis why would they drill eight holes if only four are needed,  but it feels very strong so I'm wondering just how many there actually should be. I've got the parts manual that lists the spring but it doesn't tell me how many. Can anybody remember please

I've just taken my 14" Standard's clutch apart and there are 8 springs and with 8 holes, I assume that they should all be there. I noticed that there is also a left hand threaded collar, ( Part number 5046A--"screwed collar for sliding disc") with flats on opposite sides to take a spanner, inside the clutch cover, on the shaft which adjusts the distance of the thrust washer from its bearing which also adjusts the distance from the springs. It has allowed me to adjust the gap so that the collar (Part 5042 in my case) on the end of the shaft now lines up with the tapered pin (Part 5086) hole. A previous owner does not seem to have known that the pin should be tapered as the hole has been drilled out parallel and another smaller hole has been drilled right through half way above the original!  Presumably because he didn't know about the threaded collar adjustment and couldn't line up the collar hole with the one on the shaft, so made a new one. Why is that people sometimes will not accept that they must have done something wrong when original parts don't line up??
