Atco Balmoral 14SE Plastic Petrol Tank

The threads are worn on the green plastic petrol tank on my Atco Balmoral 14SE (circa 1990 vintage) so the plastic cap no longer stays on securely so the petrol evaporates very quickly.  To be truthful the threads were not that good when I bought it new in 1990.  I haven't used this mower for more than 25 years, and I've just now restored it back to working order but I can't find anywhere who sells new petrol tanks.  There are quite a few ebay ads for second hand ones but I could end up with a tank as bad as my own.

Can anybody help please?

I presume that you have tried a new cap ?  Jon Cruse of the Hailsham Mower Centre specialises in “new old stock”.

The cap threads look fine and are not damaged or worn but the threads on the tank are - so I haven't tried a new cap.  Is there petrol resistant tape similar to PTFE that may enhance the tank threads more than they are?

I'm afraid these tanks were not good quality and seem to get worse with age. Suggest you only buy one you can check before paying for it.

If you get really stuck and desperate, many garages now use plastic 'welding guns' mostly to repair bumpers and facias, inner door panels etc. the old plastic can be matched and the join is hard to detect, if your old threads were filled right up, you could then drill and retap those threads out again?
